Postpartum Hormones + DIY Detox Deodorant Recipe (and more)

Pregnancy and postpartum presents quite a big adjustment for our bodies. The change in hormone dominance is behind so many of the symptoms associated with pregnancy.

Our body has to get rid of excess hormones through detox. Supporting your body’s detox can help with many of these pesky symptoms.

Five ways to support detox

  1. Reduce toxins coming in to your body through what you eat and put on your skin. Simply cutting out sugar can dramatically reduce your toxic load as it uses up your body’s store of magnesium, a key mineral in detoxing process.
  2. Supplement magnesium with this gentle detox I use daily, plus eat magnesium rich foods like cocoa, greens, nuts, and seeds. Take detoxing baths with Epsom salt.
  3. Use bentonite clay to draw toxins out through the skin. A bentonite clay mask can be applied to any problem area. Activated charcoal can be mixed with the clay for a boost drawing out the impurities.
  4. Plenty of water is important to our kidneys. The kidneys are responsible for removing excess hormones, vitamins, minerals, and foreign toxins such as drugs, chemicals, and food additives. Water carries these toxins out of our body. Add fresh lemon or lemon oil for added benefits.
  5. Some herbs and lemon help our body to detox. Milk thistle, turmeric, dandelion, burdock.

Whether you’ve recently had a baby or not, we all have to detox. Postpartum and pregnancy, however, add an extra load to you system because of higher blood volume your liver has to deal with + the extra hormones your body has to eventually detox.

Maybe you are trying to detox from years of using unnatural skin care and hygiene products. In this case definitely take a look at bentonite clay! It’s the one ingredient that makes transition to natural so much smoother and enjoyable. Not only does it draw toxins out the body, it’s also the main ingredient for a few of my favorite diy personal care recipes. With these recipes, just mix together in the order listed and allow time for the clay to completely combine with the water before adding the next ingredient.
